Couch Slut remain merciless on “Company Picnic With Dust Off”

Having been accustomed to extreme music for some time it’s a pleasant, almost masochist, experience when a track can shake you to the point where it’s unnerving. Brooklyn’s Couch Slut is able to do just that on “Company Picnic With Dust Off” from their newest record Contempt. Having received critical acclaim on their debut LP My Life as a Woman, the group returns for another full-length assault on the ears, combining hate fueled aggression into their mixture of crust punk, noise, and metal. The sound that Couch Slut achieves is violent and unrelenting with its shuddering bass and powerful vocals, giving promise for the record to contain as much enjoyment as it will sheer viciousness.

The track sets a rhythm that seems to ooze its way across with the fist-pounding guitar riff that’s amplified through the percussion, creating a large and heavily-distorted atmosphere.  Once vocalist Megan Osztrosits makes her appearance though is when the sinister energy comes through. Her voice is so destructive as you can literally feel it traveling from deep within her stomach, scraping across her throat with a force that would cause most to gag halfway through. As strange as it sounds it truly is a delight to hear a voice capable of such intensity that it makes you uncomfortable throughout the entire performance, leaving this sense of perpetual dread to build across the 5-minute runtime. The highlight for me is right at the closing where just as the track tapers off, they return with a deafening explosion of noise, fuzz, and screams, done in the most satisfying way.

Contempt is out now from Gilead Media and is available for purchase here.
